Meet Ebony Oshunrinde.

the 16-year old girl who created beat for Jay Z’s ‘Magna Carta Holy Grail’ album track, Crown

The rap world is buzzing with news of a precocious 16 year old Nigerian-Canadian teenager, Ebony Oshunrinde who was tapped by Jay Z for one of his “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” album tracks, Crown.

Ebony is Jay Z’s newest discovery. She goes by the name Wondagurl. She started producing beats when she was 9 years old inspired by a video of Jay Z and hip hop producer, Timbaland. She decided that day that she wanted to learn to do what Timbaland does and the rest as they say, is history.
She started learning how to make beats from videos she saw on YouTube and started entering beat making contests, winning some accolades. Then this year, she sent a track to Houston rapper, Travis Scott and a few days after, he sent her a message saying: “I’m about to change your life.” He later called her saying: “You are on Jay Z’s album, congratulations.”

Released yesterday, Thursday, July 4th, 2013, Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail has already gone platinum thanks to his deal with Samsung to give away 1 million copies of his album to Samsung Galaxy smartphone users for free. Jay Z was paid an estimated $5 million for the deal. The album has been a game changing one in the music industry and has reshaped the traditional business model for artists and record labels globally.
She hopes that her success can open doors for others. “You can do anything you want,” she says.  She is on her way to Los Angeles next week and with her new found fame, is no doubt set for success in the music industry.
When asked about next steps for Wondagurl, she said, “I want to win a Grammy.”
